# Recommendations

> Recommendation surfaces, the self-service rule editor, and the live preview of what each surface returns.

The Recommendations page lists every recommendation surface Depict serves on
your storefront. Each surface has its own rule set, edited directly on the
surface's page and verified in a live preview.

## Limits and behavior

* Saved rule changes go live on the storefront within a few minutes; the
  save confirmation states "Changes saved. Live in a few minutes."
* Rules are applied top to bottom; drag a rule to change its priority.
* Rules have no names — a rule is identified by its position ("Rule 1",
  "Rule 2").
* Contradictory rules cannot be saved: the conflict resolver must be
  completed first.
* A pinned product that is out of stock in every market is not shown in
  recommendations; the editor and the surface KPIs flag such pins.
* On surfaces that can render outside product pages, rules apply only when
  the surface is shown on product detail pages — the surface carries a
  "Product Page Only" hint.
* The live preview is not available for every surface type; personalized
  surfaces return results only once the engine has session data for a
  shopper.
* The engagement KPI tiles (clicks, impressions, CTR, attributed revenue,
  attributed add-to-carts) require performance reporting to be enabled for
  the store; the configuration tiles (rule and product counts) always show.
* Attributed revenue and add-to-carts use approximate last-touch
  attribution: the shopper's last click on the product came from a
  recommendation within 7 days, summed across markets without currency
  conversion.

## Surfaces

The list shows each surface with its rule count and stock status, and can be
searched across surfaces and rules. KPI tiles above the list cover the
selected period: **Recommendation Clicks**, **Share of All Clicks**,
**Active Surfaces**, **Custom Rules**, **Impressions**, **CTR**,
**Attributed Revenue** and **Attributed Add-to-Carts**.

Click a surface to open it. The surface page shows its own tiles —
**Rules**, **Pinned Products**, **Hidden Products**, **Targeted Products**
and **Surface Clicks** — above the rule list.

## Rules

Each rule has three parts:

* **When showing these products** — where the rule applies: specific
  products, a collection, or all products.
* **Show these products** — products always shown (pinned) in the
  recommendations.
* **Hide these products** — products never shown in the recommendations.

### Add a rule

1. Open a surface from the Recommendations page.
2. Click **Add rule**.
3. Under **When showing these products**, choose **Add products**,
   **Add collection** or **All products** and make your selection.
4. Under **Show these products**, add the products to pin, if any.
5. Under **Hide these products**, add the products to exclude, if any.
6. Click **Save rule**, then click **Save** on the rule list.

Result: the rule appears in the list at its priority position, and the save
confirmation states the changes are live in a few minutes.

To change or remove a rule, open its **More actions** menu and choose
**Edit** or **Delete**. To change priority, drag rules into order — rules
are applied top to bottom.

### Conflicts

If two rules disagree about the same products for the same trigger, saving
opens the **Resolve rule conflict** dialog. Conflicts are resolved one at a
time; for each, pick a resolution path — remove the trigger from one of the
two rules, or delete the other rule — then apply and save.

  If someone else saves different rules while you are editing, saving again
  overwrites their version with yours. Reload the page instead to see their
  version; your edits are then lost.

## Live preview

The **Live preview** button on a surface page opens a preview of what the
recommendations return right now. Pick or **Swap** the product being
previewed for ("Previewing for"), and products forced in by your rules carry
a **Pinned by rule** badge. Pinned products that cannot be shown in the
selected market are listed separately. Saved rule changes appear in the
preview within a few minutes.
